Passive Modalities in Chiropractic Care

In addition to manual adjustments and soft tissue therapy, Allied Pain Relief Clinics, Inc offers a variety of passive therapeutic modalities designed to reduce pain, restore function, and enhance the body’s natural healing processes.

These modalities are particularly helpful during the acute and subacute phases of recovery.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

What It Is:

A non-invasive therapy that uses high-frequency sound waves to treat deep soft tissues.

How It Helps:

  • Stimulates tissue healing and cell repair
  • Reduces inflammation and muscle spasms
  • Improves circulation and breaks down scar tissue
  • Increases tissue elasticity prior to stretching or adjustment

Common Uses:

Tendonitis, muscle strains, joint inflammation, chronic scar tissue, and post-surgical stiffness.

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) – Modalities & Settings

Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) uses low-level electrical currents to elicit muscle contractions and modulate pain signals. Various settings are used depending on the patient’s condition and therapeutic goals:

Interferential Current (IFC)

Purpose: Pain control, muscle relaxation, increased circulation

Mechanism: Uses two high-frequency currents that intersect to produce a low-frequency therapeutic signal deep within tissues.

Indications: Acute or chronic spinal pain, muscle spasms, joint inflammation

Premodulated Current

Purpose: Similar to IFC, but better suited for smaller treatment areas

Mechanism: Current is mixed within the machine and delivered through two electrodes

Indications: Neck pain, shoulder dysfunction, localized muscle irritation

Russian Stimulation

Purpose: Muscle re-education and strengthening

Mechanism: Delivers medium-frequency bursts to activate motor units

Indications: Postural retraining, post-injury muscle atrophy, rehabilitation of weakened muscles

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation)

Purpose: Pain modulation via the gate control theory

Mechanism: A low-frequency current stimulates sensory nerves to override pain signals

Indications: Chronic pain, neuropathic pain, home-use education

High-Volt Pulsed Current (HVPC)

Purpose: Pain reduction and wound healing

Mechanism: Monophasic high-voltage impulses enhance tissue repair and decrease inflammation

Indications: Edema reduction, soft tissue swelling, acute injury response

Mechanical Massage Therapy (Automated Massage Chairs)

Massage chairs offer computer-guided, mechanically delivered massage to provide consistent therapeutic pressure to large muscle groups in a safe, non-invasive format.

Functions: Rolling, kneading, tapping, shiatsu-style massage

Targets: Paraspinal musculature, cervical and lumbar regions, gluteal muscles

Benefits:

  • Enhances circulation and lymphatic drainage
  • Relieves muscle tension and stiffness
  • Promotes parasympathetic activation (relaxation)
  • Increases endorphin release

Massage chairs can be used pre- or post-adjustment to improve mobility and decrease muscular resistance to manual therapy.

Massage chairs can be used before or after adjustments

Massage chairs can be used pre- or post-adjustment to improve mobility and decrease muscular resistance to manual therapy.
